Skellig Michael – Hideout of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker August 20, 2018

On a recent trip to Ireland we were lucky enough to visit the island of Skellig Michael off the coast of Kerry.

Skellig Island was used to film some scenes where it served as a filming location for Jedi Master Luke Skywalker’s hideaway planet. The weather was perfect and we had very calm seas on the day we visited.

The ferry ride departed from a small village located on the ring of Kerry called Portmagee.

Rising 714 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, the UNESCO World Heritage site served as a Gaelic Christian monastic settlement from the 6th or 8th century — varying accounts on its founding exist — to the late 12th century.

The island is a stunning experience and not for the faint of heart. With over 600 steps up to the top that are on the edge of dangerous sea cliffs, the journey up can be unnerving.

I created a small video from footage taken while on the island during the trip back. It was shot and edited with my phone. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Kerry try and book a trip. You will not be disappointed.
