About Me

Christian GehrkeI started working as a web developer professionally in 1999 for a small internet service provider in Honolulu called Pacific Information Exchange Incorporated (PIXI).  I worked on a number of sites including aloha.com, hula.net and oilsofaloha.com.

I have a passion for my profession and love what I do. I am constantly learning new technology and techniques in order become better at what I do. I am able to think quickly and logically in order to adapt to new working environments and also demonstrate a passion for information design and Internet technology.

Due to the extensive variety of responsibilities over the years I am able to do just about anything that involves computers or the internet. I am proficient in a wide variety of computer languages and technologies, I am an expert with all operating systems including Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix. I am also capable of installing, configuring and fixing most network infrastructures including both fixed and wireless TCP/IP networks.

Overview: Anthology Media Group is one of the largest advertising agencies in Hawaii who just celebrated their 10th year as a company in 2017, in addition to advertising, they also provide public relations, research and digital services. I worked with all departments on multiple projects and clients. Some of the clients I work with are Hawaii Pacific Health, Marriott Hawaii, Ulupono, Halekulani, Waikiki Parc, Colleen Hanabusa, Aloha Federal Credit Union, Texaco Hawaii, Na Koa.

MVNP (Milici Valenti Ng Pack)

Dates: July 2013 – July 2015

Position: Senior Developer – Associate Digital Director

Overview: MVNP is one of Honolulu’s largest and oldest advertising agencies. They have been providing exceptional agency services for over 70 years. I joined their team as a Senior Front-End Developer and began to work on projects for Kamehameha Schools/Our Kakaako, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB/Go Hawaii) and Howard Hughes Corporation (Ke Kilohana). The projects included websites, content management systems, interactive displays, landing pages, email campaigns, social media ads and mobile applications. I soon advanced to Associate Digital Director and helped build and grow the team resulting in numerous award winning  projects.

Prudential / Pramerica

Dates: March 2009 – June 2013

Location: Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland

Position: Senior Developer/ Consultant

Overview: Pramerica is a subsidiary of Prudential and located in Ireland. Pramerica supports a large number of departments within Prudential including the software development and infrastructure on numerous information applications.

I started as a Front-End Developer and worked with the E-Business Development Group within Prudential that support all the public facing content and other internal applications. I worked on the front-end of a large content management system called Vignette which is now called OpenText.

I was quickly promoted to Senior Developer and took on a lot more responsibility within the company and eventually moved to the Law, Compliance, Business Ethics and External Affairs department working with multiple systems across multiple technologies (CSS, JQuery, XHTML, Java, IBM Portal, .NET, IBM Connections, Lotus Notes/XPages).

I worked closely with developers and product owners to insure all applications were inline with the Prudential brand and focused on increasing usability. A large number of internal applications were converted to a responsive layout as a result of tools that I introduced into the company.

Hotel Internet Solutions

Dates: February 2008 – March 2009

Overview: After my one year contract with Accubook was over I worked out a franchise deal with them and worked as a consultant supporting customers who used the Accubook software.

Services that were provided for numerous hotels and activity providers included a number of web based marketing efforts (Google Adwords, Email Campaigns and Affiliate Programs).

Accubook

Dates: January 2007 – February 2008

Location: Donegal Town, Ireland

Position: Project Manager & Front-End Developer

Overview: Accubook developed a booking engine and content management system that was used by hotels and activity providers in Donegal and other parts of Ireland. The system was web based and built using Microsoft .NET technology.

I started in a front-end development role working with our back-end developers to build out new tools, improve existing tools and develop new themes for each new and existing client.

I quickly started working directly with each of our clients to help increase their usage of our system through support and education. I also helped build custom themes and skins that suited the marketing needs of each client.

In addition to support for our own software we also provided digital marketing consultation services and managed multiple Google Adwords accounts along with other online marketing resources.

Northwest News Group (NWIPP)

Dates: November 2005 – November 2006

Location: Omagh, Northern Ireland

Position: Web Developer, Project Manager & IT Support

Overview: The Northwest News Group is one of the oldest publishing companies in Ireland and prints 6 newspapers that span over 3 counties in the northwest of Ireland.

I was hired for a one year contract to help bring each publication online and help build a system that was in-line with their current publishing workflow.

I also built an internal photo archiving system that allowed each location access to the complete archive of images collected over the years. This system indexed the meta data added by the photographers using Adobe Photoshop and allowed  users to search through thousands of images that dated back over a hundred years.

In addition to all the web development projects, I was also responsible for supporting each user, work station, printer and server on the network at 5 different locations with all hardware, software and network issues. This included scheduled upgrades, setting up new employee work stations and general daily support for any and all IT related issues.

Adaptive Designs

Dates: June 2003 – November 2005

Position: Owner, Project Manager & Designer

Overview: After leaving Viata Online (now known as SwitchFly) I worked as a freelance developer and supported each customer of the EZREZ system. I helped them manage their online content, build graphical marketing campaigns to help increase sales and supported their web based affiliate programs and marketing campaigns (Google Adwords).

I also worked with local organization in the Honolulu area with their web development needs. During this time I worked to help build sites for StarrTech (now known as Anthology Marketing Group) and the University of Hawaii School of Medicine (JABSOM).

Viata Online (now known as SwitchFly)

Dates: November 2000 – June 2003

Postion: Director of Training and Software Support & Director of Web Operations

Overview: I started as a web developer and quickly become Co-Director of Web Operations sharing the responsibility of the role with one other person. We managed a group of developers who supported both existing products (VacationHosts.com) and our new product which would eventually be called EZREZ.

Viata was a start-up company that used only open source tools and provided each person with a work station that had Mandrake installed. For Microsoft Word documents we used early versions of Open Office and were able to keep costs down but eliminating most of our license fees.

Once our new product was launched in 2002 I took over the role of training and technical support while also maintaining my role within the web operations department.

Pacific Internet Exchange Inc.

Dates: December 1999 – November 2000

Location: Honolulu, USA

Position: Web Developer

Overview: Pacific Information Exchange Inc. was a local ISP in Hawaii and at the time provided locals with dial-up connections, ISDN lines and web hosting. I was hired to help support the many sites owned by the company including a Sumo Wrestling news site and a weekly web based publication written by Bob Jones (former newspaper reporter, NBC News foreign correspondent, and reporter-anchor-news manager at KGMB-TV).
